How to clean a carpet at home
A carpet holds dust, sand and stains. Cleaned the right way, it keeps its colour and pile.

Steps
- Vacuum the carpet on both sides.
- Test colourfastness on a hidden spot.
- Foam carpet shampoo and work it in with a soft brush along the pile.
- Remove the shampoo with a clean damp cloth without over-wetting.
- Dry the carpet fully in a well-ventilated place.
Odour
Sprinkle baking soda on the dry carpet, leave for an hour and vacuum it up.
What to avoid
- Do not wash wool and silk carpets in hot water.
- Do not leave the backing damp: mold and odour follow.
- Do not dry for long in hot sun; colours fade.
When to send it to a professional
Large, heavy, hand-made and silk carpets, and old stains, are safer washed in a workshop.
